Old Novgorod Land will welcome the exhibition in 2010.

The venue is not a chance thing. The chronicled history of Velikiy Novgorod dates back to the origin of Old Rus. The script culture arose with arrival of Christianity. Novgorod Psalter is the oldest book of Rus’. It is a tiny script book consisting of bound wooden tablets created between old 900’s and early 1000’s. It was Veliky Novgorod where the birchbark manuscripts (the written records of XI-XV centuries) testifying to the high literacy of the Novgorod population were found.

Until now Novgorod has been one of the most significant education centres and the largest art centre in Europe and a solid bulwark of Orthodox Russia.

The III International Exhibition of Calligraphy will welcome participants from at least forty-three countries. Among the exhibits are the calligraphic paintings, applied calligraphy, writing materials and utensils and the unique masterpieces among which are those recognized by the Guinness World Records.

The centerpiece of exposition is formed by the exhibits from the Sacral Calligraphy collection. The welcome addresses to the project from the clerical leaders of the main religious confessions emphasize the role of calligraphy as a means of preservation of national and culture variability of peoples and a means of their spiritual rapprochement.

Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus Kirill was quoted saying: “…careful and thoughtful attention to a written word cherished in the Church due to reverent perception of sacred texts serves discovery and gain of the national historic, spiritual and culture heritage”.

Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar: “…All the peoples of our multinational country worship the script word and writing culture. Thus, this show also admits the contribution of Russia, its people and traditional confessions in development of calligraphy as an important means of spirituality development and promotion”.

Mufti Sheikh Rawil Gaynetdin, Chairman of the Mufti Council of Russia: “…The history of writing had known the rises and falls related to all the aspects of human life. Writing is the first result of human attempts to cooperate with the environment and share one’s thoughts and experience with others and the future generations as well”.
